SOPHATAI KANTHATHAM (BANGKOK, 1975)
Sophatai graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon (France) and the Arts Educational London School (England).
She attended several intensive courses in different countries, e.g. Joffrey Ballet School and Stanley Holden Dance Center (USA) and London Contemporary Dance School and Rambert School of Ballet & Contemporary Dance (UK). In 1999, she enrolled as a full-time guest student (performing) at Rotterdam Dance Academy/Codarts.
Sophatai has performed with different companies in Thailand, Germany and the Netherlands, e.g. Bangkok Ballet Theater, Oldenburgisches Staatstheater, Musiktheaters im Revier Gelsenkirchen, Städtische Bühnen Nürnberg, Palindrome Dance Company and Elshout/Händler.
She was a répétiteur for a project “Young Urban Fossils (YUF)”, collaboration between Djazzex Modern Dance Company, Rotterdam Dance Academy/Codarts and Holland Dance Festival.
Sophatai’s passion for dance has been passed down to her through her grandmother, who founded one of the oldest dance schools in Bangkok in 1960. For 14 years, Sophatai took leadership at two dance schools in Thailand before moving back to the Netherlands in 2016.
Sophatai is a Royal Academy of Dance Registered Teacher, Tutor, and Mentor (UK) and a Certified teacher of Progressing Ballet Technique (AUS).
She has taught in several dance schools in and around the Hague, e.g. Dans Creatie (Wateringen), Centrum voor Kunst en Cultuur (CKC) Zoetermeer and Studio Carina Verzijl. At the moment, she teaches ballet at De VAK Centrum voor de Kunsten (Delft) and at Ballet Barre Workouts.
Sophatai puts emphasis on correct posture & alignment, precision of technique, musicality and artistry in her class. Sheuses different kinds of methods to strengthen students, e.g. Pilates, Floorbarre and Body conditioning.
She believes that each student is special & unique in his/her own way. Her passion is to discover their talents and to challenge them to reach their full capacity.
In September, Sophatai will begin her master study at Codarts in dance therapy.
